Better is a handful of quietness than two hands full of toil (4:6).
You become a guardian of truth, suddenly concerned that every detail be exposed and examined. Instead, you think of the Psalm:
The mouth of the righteous utters wisdom, and his tongue speaks justice (37:30).
Justice is our priority now, not love, patience, gentleness, self-control, kindness, joy, or peace. We throw ourselves into this cause, into this heated argument and hot words. Surely our wisdom added to this situation will help! We think about justice and righteous anger so we won't remember that a wise man holds himself back.
That gentle and quiet spirit is an imperishable beauty. It is not situational. Cultivate this beauty and it will last. It will always be precious in the sight of God.
But why? Why is it so important to be patient with others? Why is quietness so beautiful?
It is good that one should wait quietly for the salvation of the Lord (Lam. 3:26).
It is through quietness and meekness that we draw close to God. We learn to be patient with others and we begin to learn how to wait on Him. We learn to wait in silence for Him only, and therein we find our firm foundation.
